Sir William left behind him a brief autobiographical Sketch of his professional career afloat, including his residence at Malta, which, after due consideration, has been adopted almost verbatim; since no further materials could be procured, to make it worth while to alter or extend it. Unfortunately, this Sketch ends, with the exception of a few meagre hints, at the most interesting stage of his useful life — his appointment to the high office of Surveyor of the Navy.
