Description: The principal motivating force in preparing this, book was the
author's conviction that the information it contains can be of substantial
assistance to all those who have to do with the design, construction,
and operation of ships, as well as serving as a text in basic
design. The soundness of the decisions of those in executive positions
depends on a knowledge of the fundamental facts involved. Since this
book deals with the basic and fundamental principles in ship design,
it is well adapted to the needs of executives in the shipbuilding and
ship operation activities.
The design of ships requires the constant exercise of engineering
judgment and frequently the weighing of considerations which have
no common unit of measurement. It will therefore continue into the
foreseeable future to be both an art and a science. The author has
endeavored to increase the amount of science in the process without
depreciating the need for developing good engineering judgment at no
early age. It is his hope that this book will also contribute to this
accomplishment.
